Professor Michael A. Orloff is one of the leading developers of TRIZ in the newest direction Modern TRIZ. He is a founder of the Modern TRIZ Academy (from 2000) in Berlin, Germany, which developed the very first e-course in Modern TRIZ on the platform of new methods in educating as extracting and reinventing. He also teaches "Modern TRIZ" for the Master of Science Program in Global Production Engineering at the Technical University Berlin. About the Author
Donald Voet received a B.S. in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology, a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard University with William Lipscomb, and did postdoctoral research in the Biology Department at MIT with Alexander Rich. Upon completion of his postdoctoral research, Don took up a faculty position in the Chemistry Department at the University of Pennsylvania where, for the past 38 years, he has taught a variety of Biochemistry courses as well as general Chemistry. His major area of research is the X-ray crystallography of molecules of biological interest. He has been a visiting scholar at Oxford University, The University of California at San Diego, and the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. Together with Judith G. Voet, he is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education. He is a member of the Education Committee of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. His hobbies include backpacking, scuba diving, skiing, travel, photography, and writing Biochemistry textbooks.

Judith ("Judy") Voet received her B.S. in Chemistry from Antioch College and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Brandeis University with Robert H. Abeles. She has done postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania, Haverford College, and the Fox Chase Cancer Center. Her main area of research involves enzyme reaction mechanisms and inhibition. She taught Biochemistry at the University of Delaware before moving to Swarthmore College. She taught there for 26 years, reaching the position of James H. Hammons Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry before going on "permanent sabbatical leave." She has been a visiting scholar at OxfordUniversity, University of California, San Diego, University of Pennsylvania, and the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. She is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education. She has been a member of the Education and Professional Development Committee of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as well as the Education Committee of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Her hobbies include hiking, backpacking, scuba diving, and tap dancing.

Charlotte Pratt received her B.S. in Biology from the University of Notre Dame and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Duke University under the direction of Salvatore Pizzo. Although she originally intended to be a marine biologist, she discovered that Biochemistry offered the most compelling answers to many questions about biological structure-function relationships and the molecular basis for human health and disease. She conducted postdoctoral researching the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has taught at the University of Washington and currently teaches at Seattle Pacific University. In addition to working as an editor of several Biochemistry textbooks, she has co-authored Essential Biochemistry and previous editions of Fundamentals of Biochemistry.

My 8-year-old chose to get this book with his birthday money. Unlike another paper toys book I got recently, there are no errors in tab numbering (that I've found), and every model has clear instructions. Be aware: you will need glue, and you should definitely pay attention to difficulty ratings when choosing a model for a kid to build -- make sure they start with an easy one!

I don't write reviews, but the Easter Bunny brought this and my 7 year old has been busy building away and doesn't have any intention of stopping until he's completed all 46. Glue stick needed, but we had plenty. Lost a star because they do not glow, some glow stickers can be added, but glow in the title and glowing picture on cover is misleading. Overall still cool.

My son absolutely loves this. Best gift he's received in years, as far as spending a good amount of time goes. They are so fun to build, and super cute. Dad and mom enjoy it too. Once built, you can still play with them, or build a shelf and be proud of the work.

I loved this book more than my kids but they had a lot of fun playing with the robots once they were complete. It's also a nice that these toys are disposable once the kids get tired of playing with them.

These are so cute. They're easy to make for someone who is a little familiar with paper crafting. Kiddos might need a lil help from an adult. They pop out easily and fold clearly and the directions are easy to follow. Plus, stickers!

My 10 year old son loves these!

My grandson LOVED this book!! Very easy to build our first robot. Ordering a second copy to have at my house when he comes to visit. Lots of robots! Excellent job, authors.

Hard to tear out some of them. But great instructions. My daughter loves it. You do need tape or glue. It does NOT just have slots that fit together.

I have been a vegetarian for years and had decided to go totally vegan 3 months ago. I was eating vegetables, fruit, legumes,whole wheat bread, grains, nuts, seeds, starches, & natural nut butters. I felt better but I need to lose weight and had not. I am a big fan of Dr. McDougall and spent a lot of time on his website. I finally decided to act on what he said in this book and "The Starch Solution" book. I have been following his plan for maximum weight loss for 7 days. This is vegetables, starches, grains, 2 fruits a day and legumes. He recommends no bread, pasta, nuts, seeds, or avocados until you reach your goal. (He has always said no oils of any kind.) I felt a little tired for the first day or so but now I feel great and have lost 5 lbs in 7 days. I am sticking with this until I reach my goal and then I will add some things back as recommended in the Starch Solution. I have about 50 lbs to loose and I have tried it all. It has gotten harder to lose weight as I have gotten older (59). I was not overweight when I was younger but when I reached 40 the weight just began to accumulate. This is the first time I don't have to count points, calories, or feel deprived. I can eat asmuch as I want and I have developed a new apprciation for the natural flavors of unprocessed food. I will update this as time goes on with my process.

At this point, I have read a fair amount of books on the whole foods plant-based diet, including John A. McDougall's most famous book, The Starch Solution. I've also read books written by T. Colin Campbell, Chef AJ, High Carb Hannah, Rip Esselstyn, and Douglas N. Graham. To be honest, I wasn't expecting to learn a whole lot of new information from The McDougall Program for Maximum Weight Loss, especially since The Starch Solution is typically heralded as McDougall's best book. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I was completely wrong—this book has a lot to offer, even for the most nutritionally-educated among us!Starting out in the beginning of the book, McDougall makes it clear that this is not an all-or-nothing program. Obviously, the more strictly one adheres to the program's advice, the more weight will be lost. But since change is a process and takes a considerable amount of time, he advises that we pat ourselves on our backs for every healthy choice we make, and use our lapses as learning experiences. I especially liked his dedication at the beginning of the book: "To those who suffer needlessly in order to look great." I can definitely relate to that sentiment!McDougall assures the reader that "The desire to appreciate your body and make it beautiful is one of the most natural and wonderful urges in life." However, "even more fundamental is the urge to eat, which, after all, keeps us alive." These natural instincts may seem to be at odds with one another, but McDougall asserts that they can work together to produce a beautiful-looking body at a healthy weight. In his opinion, the cultural view that they are in opposition with one another is simply a delusion that happens to also be self-destructive. Without the strong desire to eat, we might give up food for some other activity, which would result in malnourishment and possibly even death by starvation. The strength of our hunger drive is necessary for our survival as individuals as well as the survival of our species. Hunger has driven many people to perform great acts of courage as well as also ghastly acts of barbarism. In other words— the hungrier we become, the more likely we are to lose control of our actions. It's time to stop blaming overweight and obese people for their hunger drives, because hunger is completely normal and necessary for survival.Contrary to popular belief, our bodies mainly crave carbohydrates, not fat or protein. In fact, the secret to satiation is carbohydrate consumption. And that doesn't apply just to full-grown adults—it includes children as well! McDougall states, "Even in childhood, the nutrient our bodies need more than any other is carbohydrate. Adults need approximately 35 times more carbohydrates for energy than we need protein for growth, and 800 times more carbohydrate than fat." McDougall goes into great detail in Chapter Three about the benefits of carbohydrates on our health. The rest of the book covers several various topics, including how the fat you eat is the fat you wear, the importance of fiber (which is only found in plants) in the diet, the role that insulin plays in promoting obesity, what constitutes the "Maximum Weight Loss Program", the physiological reasons that women lose weight slower than men, the (small) role that exercise plays in weight loss, the effects that alcohol and coffee have on weight (and overall health), how sleep deprivation can be beneficial, and shopping and food preparation. The book ends with a lot of tasty recipes for people who need some meal planning inspiration.Overall, this is one of the best books on the whole foods plant-based diet that I have read, if not the absolute best. I would definitely recommend reading this over McDougall's The Starch Solution, even though I would recommend reading that one as well. The McDougall Program for Maximum Weight Loss goes into more detail and may be a better fit for people who are specifically looking for information to help them lose weight. I definitely recommend reading this one if you get a chance. It's relatively old (originally published in 1994), so it may even be available at your local library for free!

The diet worked. I lost 35 lbs in 3 months, and have kept it off for the past 6 months... I am still loosing inches, but the weight is now stable.

This book helps you look at food differently. It is so easy to grasp and break down to utilize in your everyday life. It's so easy. The recipes are very simple. I was able to implement eating this way into my everyday life, I work 40+ hours a week, I also workout 5x a week and still have time to visit friends and go out for social events. I saw an 8 pound drop in less than a month. I was NEVER hungry. I got to eat rice everyday (i love rice, especially brown rice). I actually saved a lot of money on groceries because i was buying whole foods, produce, beans, rice, potatoes etc.My instant pot is a lifesaver, I bought dry beans in bulk, cooked multiple batches 2-3 times a week, always had some beans with my starches and veggies, excellent! Can't recommend this book enough. For someone looking to get healthy, completely change their life around and REALLY get rid of that stubborn fat that you'll realize isn't so stubborn after following McDougall's program... this is the book for you. No matter what you'll get benefits out of it just by learning a few things about health.

Dr. McDougall gives us a better understanding of what to eat and what to stay away from. Great book! I dropped 16 lbs. the first three weeks and I'm losing 2 lbs. every week or so. It's okay that it's coming off slowly because this is a diet I can live with. I'm totally satisfied something I've NEVER been with any other way of eating.

I think this is a valuable read - if you 're sick, fat, and tired, and cry when anyone tells you Carbs are Evil - get this book.You can eat, you can be full, you can be satisfied, and you can eat carbs.....you just need to relearn a few things.

The book is kind of redundant to what is on his website for free, but it does give you more recipes and background information - which is needed if you are just starting out. The program works - but can get boring - so make sure you learn the recipes and create some new meals.

I have lost 30 pounds eating this way. I am struggling to get the last 15 off, I guess I have gotten tired and I cheat a lot. But really, you can eat oats,rice, beans and fruit, so I did not feel overly deprived. The diet is low fat vegan, so no meat, dairy or fat. I have tried so many diets and this is definitely one that is doable for a long period.

*Starred Review* There are many translations of Sophocles' Antigone but few with the understated power and spare beauty of Irish Nobel laureate Heaney's version. He has given the play a new title, The Burial at Thebes, that recalls both Antigone's punishment--to be walled up in a cave-- and the crime for which she is punished. He remains faithful to the letter and the spirit of the play, following the structure of Sophocles' fine storytelling beat-by-beat even as he finds words to make this classic story of conflict between an inflexible autocrat and an intransigent rebel legible to modern readers. Reading Heaney's achievement, it is hard not to think of the ongoing eye-for-an-eye-for-an-eye-for-an-eye debacle unfolding in Iraq. Written in a muscular but lively style, the translation, like Heaney's best poetry, finds music in the language of the streets and reveals the raw, primal power in the most carefully constructed rhetorical tropes. This is hardly surprising. In 1990 Heaney wrote The Cure at Troy, a translation of Sophocles' Philoctetes, for the Irish Field Day theater company, and met with great critical acclaim. Swensen's book is a must-read for endowment managers and other institutional investors, particularly those who take a fund-of-funds approach (as does Yale, where Swensen is Chief Investment Officer). Swensen aptly lays out the investment policy that has enabled Yale to consistently outperform other U.S. endowments. As Yale's CIO, Swensen has set a target portfolio allocation that departs significantly from the still heavily U.S. equity and debt-focused strategy of most endowments. Swensen's approach includes a large allocation to asset classes that are not highly correlated to the U.S. public equity market. He outlines these "alternative" classes in his book, giving the reader an excellent view of how alternative investments can increase risk-adjusted portfolio returns.Perhaps the biggest contribution of Swensen's book, however, is the debunking of myths that still lull fiducaries into making the wrong decisions, for example when it comes to picking investment managers. Swensen advises against chasing managers who have performed well simply because of their past performance. If attributes such as personal integrity and the right fee structure are lacking, solid past performance can become a liability, not an asset. Swensen describes the example of private equity firm KKR-- after tremendous early successes, the flood of investor capital into KKR enabled the firm's partners to set up a fee structure that ensured big payoffs for themselves even if their funds underperformed. This is just one of many valuable lessons the reader will draw from Swensen's book.

Pioneering Portfolio theory is a must read. As other reviewers have said it's essential for any endowment manager. However, it's also a great read for those not interested in asset management. Besides being a fantastic overview of different asset classes and how to think about them, Swensen talks at length about alignment of incentives, how to balance the qualitative and quantitative, and how differing timeframes influence your decisions. All of which are huge components of the decisions anyone makes that often aren't thought about rigorously.

Swensen's framework for Endowment Managment remains a thoughtful and clearly articulated look at institutional best practices.A key lesson of his is often overlooked. Each institution is unique, and should not attempt to copy what has been at Yale or other successful investment programs.I would love Swenson to write another book, but my best guess is it would be very similar to the original masterpiece.

This is an excellent book about the workings of an institutional portfolio and the various influences pulling at investment decisions.Lots of good anecdotal stories of mis-steps by *other* institutions. I would love to hear about some mistakes that DS has made during his tenure.He deals implicitly w/ agency issues that exist in most money management situations. For a more detailed explication of agency conflicts, read, "Unconventional Success".He attributes a lot of manager success to luck. However, how much of DS's and Yale's success is due to luck? He does not subject his own performance (that of managing the managers) to any sort of benchmark.Finally, he gives very short shrift to the back-office and operational issues (1 page at the end of the book). This is the achilles heel of 80% of management firms. They cannot scale, control, and maintain quality as they grow. This is the same, "Its all in the front office" mentality that presages so many other stumbles into mediocrity (not blow ups - just a benign drift downwards in rankings). I hope this same fate does not befall DS and Yale.

The marketing/techno-speak of the investment management industry sometimes gets to be overwhelming, this book can be an antidote. Swensen focuses on policy objectives, manager incentives, relative market (in)efficiencies and fundamental asset class characteristics to write a valuable resource for anyone considering the plethora of modern-day investment vehicles. Practically every concept is explained in language that is intelligible to someone with a basic understanding of the current investment markets. Absolutely worth the purchase.

I have recommended this book to numerous colleagues at work. We use it as a great summary of our investment philosophy and as a touchstone for investment values and sanity checks. We have purchased mutiple copies which we give to stakeholders to spread the word and bring them up to speed with these investment truths.I've been a professional f.m. for 25 years and I wish I'd read this book closer to year 1 than year 25.BTW we got far less incremental value out of Swensen's second book

In addition to books, he has co-produced over 40 educational DVDs with The Gnomon Workshop, of which nine feature his own lectures. For several years, Scott chaired the Entertainment Design department at Art Center College of Design. He frequently lectures around the world for various corporations, colleges, and through his own workshop brand, SRW. In addition to teaching, Scott has worked on a wide variety of projects ranging from vehicle and alien designs for the Hot Wheels animated series Battle Force Five, to theme park attractions such as the Men in Black ride in Orlando, Florida for Universal Studios. Some of his clients include the BMW subsidiary Design-works/USA, Bell Sports, Giro, Mattel Toys, Spin Master Toys, Patagonia, the feature film Minority Report, Nike, Rockstar Games, Sony Online Entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment of America, Buena Vista Games, THQ, and Fiat to name just a few.

This book is just fantastic and is utterly a case of you get out of it what you put in.I have spent time daily in it over the past 4 months, working through it with every bit of dedication I gave my previous mechanical engineering studies and I have benefited massively. If you approach it with your sleeves rolled up and constantly try out what you read on paper, you'll grow a lot artistically. It is also utterly essential that you go through the videos, from which you will learn as much, if not more, than from the book (a link and pswrd is provided in the book); here is where you actually see the author drawing, and can really analyze his movements and methods, and he drops a lot of hints and tricks. I took copious notes as I went through these, and worked along in parallel as I watched. The attached show some of the drawings I produced based on Scott's instructions (I clearly still have a long ways to go, but would never have believed could have created these several months ago!). There are certain themes that come up over and over again which you can't help but absorb, much like taking a class.If this is your only reference and you are determined to rigorously understand perspective, I think you'll find the explanations to be less than complete, and the organize of chapters 2 thru 4 to be less than perfect. Broad principles are not so much stated as they are demonstrated; I didn't mind this challenge, though, and it made me go deep with the subject and extract what I saw as the unifying principles (this is in regard to understanding line convergence in general 3D space). I got to the bottom of this by working through my own derivations.The author demonstrates really fantastic craftsmanship, artistry, and creativity, and is a very strong communicator. I wish he got a little more pumped up/energetic in the videos, but I suppose the quality and volume of his work speak to his profound underlying passion for it. He manages to break down complex constructions to be utterly doable. Amazing. Right now I am starting in on the sequel "How to Render". Overall, I think this is a simply fantastic track to get on if you are a beginning and want to massively improve your drawing skills; going this direction you are basically aligning with a top instructor from one of the best design institutes in the world (Art Center College of Design). We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Mr. Robertson for this work.

As lots of others have said, the title of this book is extremely misleading. Not only does the book teach basically no drawing basics, it contains virtually no information on drawing anything other than imaginary buildings or machines. If you want to draw people, animals, environments that actually exist, or anything like that, this book won't help you at all. There's also nothing in this "How to Draw" book about value or shading, at all. The book seems to be written by working concept artists for other working concept artists. Why someone already gainfully employed in their chosen profession would need a manual on the rudiments of their craft is a mystery for you to solve, dear reader.Having said that, I purchased this book well aware of what kind of book it was based on recommendations from other people who had used it. Even so, I found the book disappointing. While the techniques the authors lay out definitely work, they're also extremely tedious and result in ugly drawings rife with unnecessary construction lines. All of that wouldn't be so bad if the authors did a better job of organizing their information and explaining things. At numerous points in the book, the exercises expect you to be able to apply skills that earlier exercises barely taught at all, explained in a completely different context, or sometimes didn't even teach. This makes working through the book an arduous process.An infuriating aspect of the book is ridiculous amount of physical and electronic drafting tools you're expected to have on hand if you want to emulate the instructors' techniques. For example, to accurately reproduce what the authors do in the book you'll need a full set of ellipse templates (~$400), an eleven-point scale divider ($150-$300, if you can even find one for sale), and a golden ratio caliper or divider (~$70). That just the physical stuff. The authors state that free 3D modeling software like SketchUp can be used to emulate some of the stuff they do in the book. Then they go on to (with a single exception) only use MODO and use it to do things SketchUp can't. A perpetual MODO license with maintenance added costs (try to keep a straight face, folks) $2,000. You can find cheaper workarounds to some of the drafting tools and software the authors use, but you won't find how to do so in the book.Finally, and somewhat ironically considering the book was written by designers, the physical book isn't well-designed. While the pages are nice and heavy, the binding is dime store novel tier. The book won't lie flat, so you have to crack the spine wherever you want the book to stay open without using binder clips or dropping something heavy onto it to hold it open. This frustrating in any kind of book, but in a manual/textbook where you're supposed to do exercises out of the book while referring to it, it's an unacceptable oversight.I don't understand why this book has so many five-star reviews. It isn't useless, but it's not one of the better instructional art books I've read. If you're interested in a somewhat similar style of drawing presented in a much better way that also teaches you to draw things other than stuff that looks like it should appear exclusively on prog rock album covers, I'd recommend Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching course and/or his Dynamic Sketching and Dynamic Bible books which, unfortunately, are often sold out and quite expensive when they are in stock.

This is a fantastic instructional book that teaches you the fundamentals of technical drawings (vehicles, buildings, backgrounds, props, etc). It does'nt have many examples of "here's what some people do wrong, and here's how to fix it" which is what kept this from being a five start review, but this is still a powerful learning tool none the less.Something to note is this book IS NOT for absolute beginners. You still need to know a bit about drawing, as well as understand the mental aspect of visual problem solving. In other words you should know things like "feeling it out" and how to get into that "art mode" where the words in your mind synchronize with the actions of your body and you loose track of time. Books like "Drawn to Life" and "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" can help you with that.Also note this book is for TECHNICAL drawings, so while the draftsmanship and knowledge of construction and perspective will carry over into your figure/creature designs, you'll still need to study those "soft body" drawing skills seperatly

Scott Robertson is an extremely talented concept and environment artist, without a doubt.I have to say that the title of this book is somewhat misleading, though. Buying this book, I expected a more general approach to drawing practice, but I received a book that covered some basic warm-up exercises followed by an in-depth perspective study that evolved into vehicle and architecture design.If you want to understand the fine details of perspective, mirroring, vehicle design and architecture - this is the book for you. The warm-ups in this book are also fantastic for any artist.
